What are we doing??

The editorial I would like to comment on is Lisa Blomberg's "Libya: Should We Be There?" In Lisa's blog she talks about how the United States shouldn't be in Libya since we have our own national problems to take care of. Lisa Blomberg comments on how the United States has no responsibility for what is happening in Libya since the nation doesn't need to part of another possible war. There are many problems that the US has to resolve. The national deficit, hurting economy, war in Iraq, and the help being given to Japan are issues that need to be resolved before heading out and bringing on another problem.I agree with her point of view regarding this issue. Obama needs to see that this nation can't solve all the problems the world comes too. There's only so much the United States can do at a time and to be able to help others it has to fix itself first because then what use are we for others.
Even though Obama may have good reasons to be over there it has to be noted that at the moment it may not be the brighest idea. Who knows when our economy will be in good stand or when the war in Iraq will finally end so with another possible war the nation might just go into chaos.

Obama's War on Schools

Barack Obama was supposed to get rid of Bush’s No Child Left Behind legislation, yet what he has proposed hasn’t given many good results either. Obama’s approach called Race to the Top has been much worse than NCLB. The reforms he is proposing still wouldn’t solve the more serious problems NCLB has caused. NCLB’s theory was that schools would improve a lot if every child in 3rd to 8th grade were tested every year and then the results were made public. If results didn’t improve in the mathematical and reading areas by 2014 then there would be firing of staff and closing of the school. What people have seen is that those results aren’t happening and 2014 is getting close so what NCLB is leading to is the destruction of public education. Teachers have to focus on the skills of test taking instead of any other area of study which only makes students become less and less interested in school so test scores are going down. On the other hand what Obama is doing with his Race to the Top is that teachers are evaluated by the test results of the students. If there are low testing scores then that is what determines if a teacher will get fired. Unlike NCLB that directed its attention to test scores, Race to the Top solely relies on teachers and blames them for what good or bad students do. But what this doesn’t take into account is how some students may be sick and miss school which results in bad test scores and this in no way is the teachers fault. It keeps putting more and more pressure on the teachers so they don’t have time for innovation and creativity and kills many of the student’s interest in school. Teachers are becoming aggravated because they feel their profession is being attacked. Instead of putting so much pressure and blaming teachers for the results that students have, they should give more funding to them which will actually help out in improving test scores. Closing down schools will affect everyone’s public education and sooner or later there will be none. Click here to view article.

Obama's Incoherent Case for War

Mona Charen argues that President Obama has being hypocritical about what he had once about the war in Iraq being dumb with what is happening in Libya. She mentions how now the President can order American Forces into action without the US Congress. Even though President Obama once said he opposed dumb wars like the one in Iraq. He believed that Saddam didn't pose an "inminent or direct threat to the United States" even though he had he attacked his neighbors: Iran, Kuwait, and Israel. On the other hand Qaddafi has not gone past his borders and Obama is going for war. Obama like everyone else knew that Saddam had chemical and biological weapons and still didn't see the point in that war yet in Qaddafi's case there is no sign or threat of any of this. So ironically he is supporting something even dumber than what he thought about the war in Iraq. It seems that for President Obama the idea of image making is more important than policymaking. I agree with Mona Charen because it is clear how hypocritical he is being. Saddam was a much bigger and greater threat than Qaddafi, yet he disagreed with the war then. Click here to view article.

The Justice Will See You Now

This article is about how President Obama's health care law may be up to Justice Kennedy. At the moment the health care law has had two district judges vote for it and two against it. It is still not certain it'll end up in the Supreme Court but if it does it will be up to Kennedy to decide for or against it. What has been established in 1991 was the individual mandate that says that whoever can afford health care insurance must buy it. Later on there were two bills proposed but weren't accepted and they showed how the individual mandate was the central idea for the Republicans. After Obama proposed the new health care law the Republicans tried to convince the courts that the individual mandate was a regulation of economic inactivity. At the end it will come down to Kennedy to resolve this and whichever way he may go will cause a dramatic impact. I believe this article is worth reading because it is a major dispute that is going on right now and that will affect Americans. Whether the health care law is passed or not health affects everyone so we have to pay close atention to issues regarding it. Click here to view article.
